ABA – Tax and Accounting Services in Orewa

Our reputation has been built on providing local businesses with high quality financial, business and accounting services since 2006, servicing Orewa, Silverdale, Red Beach, Millwater, Warkworth and Whangaparaoa areas as well as throughout New Zealand. 

James Murray, the firm’s principal, started the business when he moved to the area from Henderson. From our office at 178 Hibiscus Coast Highway at Hilltop Shops, we currently have 13 full-time and part-time staff who are dedicated to meeting the needs of all our clients.  

Meet the team

James Murray –


James Murray is the Principal of Associated Business Advisors Limited (ABA).  He is a Chartered Accountant, registered Auditor, acts as a Liquidator, is a holder of a Certificate of Public Practice (CPP) and as such is recognised as a Qualified Statutory Accountant (QSA). With over 40 years’ experience in the accounting industry he has extensive accounting knowledge. He is committed to helping businesses with strategic planning, structure, buying/selling and problem solving.  James has a Master of Commerce degree in Management Studies (with Honours) from Auckland University.   He is a Business Mentor with Business Mentors New Zealand (BMNZ) and is a past President of the Rotary Club of Orewa. He continues his community work as an officer of Hibiscus Coast Grandparents Parenting Grandchildren Inc. and a Trustee of Future Whangaparaoa Trust.  James lives in Orewa and in his spare time enjoys overseas travel, fishing, exploring other parts of NZ in his campervan, and spending time with his family. 

Crystal Scott –

Business Advisory Services Manager

Crystal joined our firm in August 2010.  She is a Chartered Accountant gaining her qualification in Canada prior to moving here and is also a XERO Certified Advisor.  As Business Advisory Services (BAS) Manager, Crystal deals with a number of larger ABA clients, along with managing all of the compliance work the practice is completing, including training and staff engagement. Crystal has implemented many systems to help our firm operate more efficiently.  These processes enabled her to work for ABA remotely while she returned to Canada for two years.  She continually strives to find ways to add value and improve processes for our firm and our clients.  Her dedication to the accounting profession and range of experience has brought excellent value to ABA and its clients.  In her spare time Crystal loves running, dirt bike riding and spending time with her young family.  

Cornelius Du Plessis –

Audit Manager/Accountant

Cornelius joined ABA in March 2017, after immigrating with his family from Pretoria in South Africa.  He is an experienced Auditor who has a focus on meeting deadlines for clients. Cornelius started his own successful Audit and Accounting Practice in Pretoria in 2002 which he owned and ran up until leaving the country to move to New Zealand.  Cornelius gained a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) (with Honours) in Accounting, from the University of Johannesburg, and then gained his CA qualification. He is a XERO Certified Advisor.  Cornelius lives locally in Dairy Flat and in his spare time loves spending time with his family, going to the movies and exploring the area on day trips over weekends.

Nada Maurovich –

Tax & Review Services Manager/Accountant

Nada is a qualified Chartered Accountant, a member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ).  She is also a XERO Certified Advisor.  Nada is originally from Croatia and has extensive experience in general accounting and auditing. Her auditing experience has covered a range of clients including manufacturing, trade, services and internal auditing. She worked as an auditor for Price Waterhouse Coopers both in Croatia and in Auckland before joining our team in April 2010.  In her current role she is engaged in quality review of both compliance and audit work, training of staff as well as providing various tax advisory services to clients. She continually strives to maintain a high quality of specialised audit, compliance and tax services and has brought excellent value to ABA and its clients. In her spare time Nada loves reading, travelling, exercising in the local gym and spending time with her husband and two young sons. 

Keri-Ann Muller –

Specialist Services Manager/Accountant

Keri-Ann is a senior member of ABA’s compliance team and assists with new client growth, marketing and other ad-hoc accounting tasks.  She has been with the ABA team since March 2011.  Keri-Ann obtained a Bachelor of Management Studies with an Accounting major from Waikato University in October 2003 and is a XERO Certified Advisor. She has worked in medium-sized accounting practices since graduating, and previously had a background in Business and Rural Banking.  She has a personal interest in property investment and is always keen to add value to clients where possible.  During her spare time Keri-Ann enjoys paddle boarding Orewa estuary, running, and watching her daughters play netball and tennis.  

Betty Murray –

Administration Manager

Betty is our superstar office administrator and has been with ABA since November 2006.  She is responsible for many of ABA’s back-office functions to ensure the smooth operation of the office. These include payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable for ABA. Prior to that she held various personal assistant roles in the education sector. In her spare time Betty is a keen card player, loves to get outdoors and spend time in her garden, along with travel and catching up with family and friends.

Andrea Schreuder –


Andrea has been part of our compliance team since May 2008.    She has completed accounting work for some of our clients for many years now and has developed strong relationships with them.  Andrea is a XERO Certified Advisor and also one of ABA’s in-house XERO trainers.  Her prior work experience is in the banking industry.  Andrea has a fantastic work ethic, is a positive member of our team and always keen to give her clients the highest level of service.  In her spare time she loves a good movie and the outdoors, enjoys cooking and catching up with family and friends and is always keen to watch her children play sport 

Tony Johnson –

Tax Specialist/Accountant

Tony has been employed by ABA as an accountant and tax specialist since June 2010.  He has a penchant for Tax legislation, and as a result has extensive experience in overseas income, pensions, pension transfers, foreign investment funds (FIF), tax on property transactions (including GST) and tax residency, as well as IRD Disputes and IRD Audits.  This has resulted in positive outcomes for many of our clients on a number of complex tax issues.   Tony studied accounting at Canterbury University and for many years ran his own food processing and distribution business.  This has given him the valuable business background that puts him in good stead to assist our clients on many levels.  In his spare time Tony enjoys going to the movies, going for walks, and furthering his keen interest in all things relating to investment.

Shelley Phillips –

Administrator/ Body Corporate

Shelley joined our team in June 2010.  She adds great value to ABA along with her positive attitude and welcoming smile Her role as administrator covers a broad range of tasks within the practice including our Company and Trust Formations, Body Corporate Administration, Client Due Diligence, and many other administrative duties.  She has excellent communication skills and is a valued member of the team.  Shelley lives locally with her family and in her spare time enjoys playing the trombone and entering chess tournaments.

Sarah Lee –


Sarah joined ABA in July 2015 as part of our compliance team and is a XERO Certified Advisor.  Since joining ABA she has assisted many of our clients with completing and filing their GST and annual accounts, along with getting them set up on XERO.  As a school-leaver, Sarah commenced work as a receptionist in an accounting firm on the North Shore where her position developed into an accounting role and resulted in 20 years’ experience with the same company.  Sarah lives locally, is an avid Warriors fan, and enjoys a good game of squash as well as spending time on the side lines watching the kids play sport. 

Cheryl Ladd –


Cheryl is our most recent addition to ABA’s compliance team starting in June 2019.  Prior to this Cheryl had taken some time off to raise a family and manage the family business. She completed a Bachelor of Business in Accounting and International Business at the Auckland University of Technology in 2003 and is a Chartered Accountant. She has worked mainly in small to medium sized accountancy firms specialising in medium sized businesses including companies, trusts, partnerships and managed funds. In her spare time Cheryl loves reading, exercising at the gym, upcycling and painting old furniture, and spending time with friends and family.

Shawn Yuan –


Shawn, a Chartered Accountant who graduated from the University of Waikato, qualified with a Master of Management Studies.  His assurance services experience includes audits of charities, real estate trust accounts, early childhood education services, private training establishments, Not for Profit organisations, forests, schools, small to intermediate sized companies and AML reporting entities.  He holds a Public Practice Certificate and recently qualified as a certified anti-money laundering specialist (ACAMS), which enhances his competence and knowledge in the AML audit area.
